Catskills Creative Residency

Description

The mission of Arts and Ecology Inc is to co-create a model for resilient and regenerative economic development in the Catskill Mountain region, and in regions across the world, through education and the arts. This artist residency is hosted by Arts and Ecology Inc at a beautiful and rustic summer camp in the Catskill Mountains. The site includes an educational farm as well as 125 acres of fields, forest, and wetlands. The days will be spent creating, harvesting food from the farm for the meals, sharing works in progress together by the fire at night, and sleeping in simple wooden cabins. Catskills Creative Residency is designed for creative practitioners at any stage in their careers, and especially for those whose practice often takes them outside a private indoor studio and thrives outdoors, in community with others. The residency culminates in an open studio event where residents can show works in progress.
Creative practitioners from the following disciplines are invited to apply: Performance, Creative Writing, and Land Art/Eco Art. They will also consider artists working in Photo/Video, Fiber Arts, Culinary Arts, Horticulture, and interdisciplinary artists. The residency is also open to artists who have, up to this point, been working exclusively in a studio and would like to try a new way to work. Individuals, collectives, and families with children are all welcome to apply. This residency is open to artists who are at least 18 years old, including current students.

Catskills Creative Residency is a good fit for artists who wish to:

  • Experiment within their medium, and practice new modes of research, inquiry, and production
  • Create in dialogue with people, place, and ecosystem
  • Enjoy the outdoors, building campfires, exploring the woods, walking barefoot
  • Actively steward and care for their social and material environments

This residency is NOT a good fit for artists who require:

  • 24-hour solitude, with no desire to interact with others
  • Private indoor studio
  • Luxury accommodations
  • Toxic materials, or materials that are very weather sensitive, to create work

Please keep in mind that:

  • All residents have dedicated work spaces depending on their practice and discipline, but there are no private indoor studios provided as part of this residency
  • Artists-in-residence are required to contribute to the maintenance and well-being of the site. This may include contributing to cooking and cleaning, as well as helping out on different projects approximately 90 minutes every day
  • There is no requirement for artists to produce anything
Outcome

This is a non-outcome oriented residency, with the opportunity to showcase works-in-progress at an open studio event that is open to the public.

Technical Information
  • Internet Connection is available at specific locations on the camp (not everywhere)
  • Dance / Performance Practice Space with wooden floor are shared, and artists can sign up for private use of the spaces as well
