Description

artellewa is an art space, founded in 2007. The space is located in Ard El Lewa, a densely populated informal area located between two of Cairo’s largest informal areas, Imbiba and Boulak El Dakrour. artellewa creates a space for the formation and activation of dialogue between artists and society; facilitates artists projects; offers workshops for community members and emerging artists; exhibits art and hosts artists-in-residence in addition to providing special projects to enrich the civic and cultural life in Ard El Lewa, and using art to improve the urban environment. Artellewa is divided into a number of spaces, all located in two buildings on Sharea Mohamed Ali el Esseary. These spaces, including workshops, residency spaces, an office, a library, and two rooftops, provide a range of diverse spaces to enable resident artists to implement their projects and workshops.

Studio Khalat is part of Artellewa and is located in Cairo and Giza. It is a space equipped for artists’ work, allowing a group of artists to work on projects for periods ranging between one month and one year. Studio Khalat gives artists the opportunity to communicate with residents and craftsmen of Ard El Lewa, and to interact with the surrounding environment. The key concept of “Khalat” (Mixer) is that it is an open, undivided studio designed to facilitate interaction between diverse artists. Artists communicate with a public audience through a weekly open studio day. Open studio days, every friday, include a variety of artistic performances.
Accommodation Information

Located on the fourth floor, the apartment is a residency which can accommodate two artists at a time. Two spacious live/work studios with separate entrances are connected with a shared kitchen, full bathroom, and common room with tables and chairs for working and meeting. The apartment is equipped with all the basic necessities for comfortable living in the style of informal settlement homes.

Studio Information

The Khalat (Mixer) is an open, undivided studio designed to facilitate interaction between diverse artists. The 100 square meter studio is located on the ground floor, with ceilings of 4.25 meters. It includes a simple theater, spaces for work, and some devices and utilities for artistic production. The studio is equipped with storage cupboards, tables and chairs for work, a bathroom and kitchenette for drinks. The studio accommodates 4-6 artists or a theater group at a time.

In addition to the Al Khalat space, resident artists are also invited to use the studio spaces of the residency. Details about spaces in artellewa click here.

Location

artellewa art space is located in Ard El Lewa, an informal residential neighborhood in the northwest of Giza, Egypt. Situated between the two great squatter settlements of Cairo, Boulak El-Dakrour and Imbaba, Ard El Lewa is a labyrinth of crowded dirt roads housing grey concrete buildings. It is an Egyptian variation of the crisscrossing streets just off El Ravel in Barcelona, where immigrants live in grey buildings; it is also a reminder of the banlieue (housing projects) of Paris.
