Call for Artistic Research AiR

Fluid Materialities 2025, artist-run program, Germany

Fluid Materialities emphasizes the interconnectedness of all life forms, asks about the agenda of non-human beings, listens to the stories of things and materiality, and creates space for collective consideration and reflection on coexistence and diversity in an ever-changing future. We are seeking contributions that embody these acknowledgements in their artistic practice.

The program is hosted by artist Marie-Luise Meister, funded by the European Union and supported by the Goethe-Institute. Marie-Luise Meister is a transdisciplinary artist with a professional background in theatre and project management, focusing on media arts, writing and composing with a body-based research practice. Collaborators on this project include the Department of Art and Design at the University of Applied Sciences Trier, curator and co-founder of the Collective Rewilding Sabina Oroshi, and Palais Kesselstatt (a.o.).

The residency fosters a collaborative environment for the exchange of diverse knowledge, insights, and sense of intuition. The site-specific nature of the residency allows for immersion in Trier’s historical and architectural vibrancy, as well as its rich natural environment of mountains, rivers and waterfalls, to work on individual artistic threads of Fluid Materialities. The residency culminates in a public presentation.

Program

  • Excursions to nature and landscape areas around Trier.
  • Visit to KINDLAB at the Department of Art and Design, University of Applied Sciences Trier, to get an inside perspective on their research process in the field of AI, design & sustainability.
  • An introduction to ceramic and 3D printing and a hands-on workshop if you wish to experiment with the medium.
  • Visit to the Musée d’Art Moderne and the Forum d’art contemporain in Luxembourg City.
  • Regular opportunities to share your artistic process and research, as well as conversations about ‘making with’ nature, AI, materiality, site-specific responsibilities, and more than human approaches at a pace that suits individual workflows. (Experience of working with AI is not required.)

Fluid Materialities also acknowledges our bodies as materiality, intertwined with everything else. We consider rest, digestion, and recharging as part of the work, advocate slow and sustainable ways of working, encourage deep listening, and integrate artistic research with a reflective structure that examines our roles as artists within a capitalist system that often disregards the importance of bodily intelligence.

Artist Compensation: €750 / month

Free accommodation (private room, shared facilities, or studio apartmented, if you come with your child)
