Description
Since 2005, Jukka and Maja Rajala-Granstubb have developed the historical buildings of Malakta Art Factory into a space for artist studios, cultural and philosophical exchange, annual DanceLab and PhotoLab intensives, national and international collaboration, a nationally broadcast children’s television series, community events and an Artist Residency programme.
Description of the residency programme:
The Malakta Art Factory Artist in Residency (AiR) Programme is now accepting proposals for 1-3 month residencies from Visual Artists, Dancers, Writers, Filmmakers and Photographers.
Malakta’s creative program, the AiR and annual DanceLab and PhotoLab intensive courses work around an annual theme. The 2015 theme will be “Landscape” and residents are expected to explore this in some capacity during their stay.
The Malakta AiR offers a two bedroom fully furnished apartment with private kitchen, bathroom and access to extensive facilities in a converted historic building. A former dairy, the grounds and traditional wooden buildings hold an art centre, gallery, permanent Studio holders and a mini-cinema.
Outcome
By negotiation. Opportunity for artist talk and/or exhibition in on-site gallery.
Studio Information
24 Hour access to workspace and tools and equipment suitable for painters, illustrators and sculptors.
Photographic Darkroom comprising of two colour head enlargers (35mm to 4x5 format) and a Jobo ATL-3 .
Film Processor (can process Colour Negative and Slide from 35mm to 4x5 format). Residents are expected to provide their own chemistry and paper
Foundry with foundry oven, sand and manual tools.
Collaboration and Networking opportunities through the extensive Malakta network
Access to natural materials and van (upon negotiation) for transport
Use of Canon 5d mk3 with lenses and equipment upon negotiation
Performance/Dance rehearsal space with wooden dance flooring
Accommodation Information
Private apartment with sleeping area, kitchen and bathroom. Access to separate “hospitality” style kitchen facilities if required.
24h access to traditional Finnish wood-burning sauna and additional bath and shower rooms. Shared residents car and bikes, one with child seat and helmet (petrol costs the responsibility of the artist)
Airport or train pick-up upon arrival and departure + Welcome dinner
Wi-Fi connection in all spaces. Residency cell phone with Finnish SIM, with number provided to residents before their residency (phone credit the responsibility of the artist).
Washing machine and dryer for laundry
Regular excursions, with the possibility of additional tailored excursions for residents.
Family friendly environment. There is a large garden suitable for children with sandbox etc.
Location
Malakta is based in Malax, twenty minutes drive from Vaasa, Western Finland. Located in serene countryside, Malakta is unique in that it is a thriving centre of creativity in a rural environment.
