Gwenn-Aël Lynn at Villa de Bank

Gwenn Aël Lynn was selected by the Pépinières Program 2006 to stay and work for three months at the AKI Art Academy in the city of Enschede. Now he is showing his final presentation at Villa de Bank.

Interactive Sound and Odour installation at De Overslag, Eindhoven

Gwenn-Aël Lynn / Paul Jansen Klomp / Antony Maubert / Michel Roudnitska

This collaborative installation was initiated while in residency in Enschede through the European Pépinières program for young artists . Trans Artists is the coordinator for the Pépinières in the Netherlands.

It is now reinstalled at De Overslag in Eindhoven. Three experts helped Gwenn-Aël Lynn along the way: Paul Jansen Klomp [electronics] from the AKI, Antony Maubert [sound] from Paris, and Michel Roudnitska [odours] from Nice. The original intent of this project was to reconsider European history, and in particular Dutch culture, from a post-colonial perspective. This reconsideration questions the definition of art itself in relation to Dutch colonial history and its contemporary offshoot: globalization and diaspora, processes that continue until the present day. This is achieved by combining odours and sounds in an installation.

As they were researching (historical) material they quickly realized that reading would not be enough to understand the current situation. So, Gwenn-Aël Lynn tried to meet and interview people who were directly involved with these issues. Most of them agreed to lend their voices for this installation.

In the interviews suggestions for a number of odours came up. In this way the voice (sound) determined the odour. Composer Antony Maubert produced soundpieces based upon these odours; the odour determined the sound. Beside this Maubert composed other pieces in which he worked with the interview material (the mood, the timbre of the voice and the content) as well as specific odours. His compositions partly contain daily life sounds.

It was first shown at Villa de Bank, in Enschede, in April 2006. In its adaptation to De Overslag the overall aspect of the installation has been enhanced. Thanks to the time spent in De Overslag, the sound has been re-spatialized (the motion of sound in space), and some of the electronics has been redesigned, as well as the “look” of the smell diffusers. The new show will be running from March the 11th to April the 1st. In September 2007 it will travel to Luxembourg, where it will be part of the Forum for young European Artists.
