Residence opportunities for writers and translators
September 15th 2009, the meeting space at the Dutch Society of Authors in Amsterdam was packed with writers and translators. They listened to first-hand experiences of being an author-in-residence by writers Erik Lindner, Willem Melchior, Rashid Novaire, and translator Jeanne Holierhoek.
Erik Hagoort of Trans Artists first presented an overview of the rich possibilities of artist-in-residence programs for writers and translators. He informed the public about using the Trans Artists website to search for residence programs that match with the specific wishes of authors and translators.
Erik Lindner stayed at several writer-in-residence centres, among them the Centre international de poésie Marseille and twice the Taipei Artist Village in Taiwan. For him both spots were a garantee for rich and raw experiences. Willem Melchior had to conclude, after a stay of four weeks at Omi International Arts Center near New York that it was fun, but for production he'd better stay and work at home, at his own desk.
Meeting at Dutch Society of Authors
For Jeanne Holierhoek translators' houses are indispensable and a great stimulance for the hard labour of the translator. More than once she used the accommodation and excellent library of the Europäisches Übersetzer Kolloquium. Rashid Novaire finished the meeting with his residency experience at the Chinese European Art Center in Xiamen, China. There, he proclaimed, he learned what it is to go on with writing.
