Open call - The Artist Entrepreneur

Open call - The Artist Entrepreneur

PRAKSIS, Unge Kunstneres Samfund (UKS) and The Moving Museum are delighted to work with artist Jeremy Bailey (CA) to develop PRAKSIS's summer 2017 residency The Artist Entrepreneur. The average artist’s yearly earnings from art practice is estimated at less than $10,000 US dollars. In the wake of widespread public defunding of the arts, there is mounting pressure on artists and galleries to “innovate or die”. Emerging from this crisis is the seductive but problematic image of the Artist Entrepreneur, a creative entropic force, leveraging the tools of startup culture and capital to self-disrupt and innovate new models of artistic production. Should artists embrace, subvert or actively resist this new identity? What does it risk?

This residency offers accommodation for non-Oslo based residents in central Oslo. Local residents will continue to live at their usual address. The residency community will regularly come together at the residency studio space and at organised events and meals. Regular meals will bring the residency community together for discussion, debate and friendship. On week days PRAKSIS will provide lunch. Dinners for all residents will be held weekly with invited guests.

Oslo has a vibrant and adventurous arts landscape. PRAKSIS will provide residents with information and links to the city’s art scene, informing them about exhibitions, talks, performances and other events. PRAKSIS seeks wherever possible to connect participants with relevant organisations and individuals in Oslo. The Artist Entrepreneur residency aims to introduce the residency community to creatives and innovators in various spheres including: curators, artists, designers, and tech specialists. While the residency is free and offers accommodation and meals, PRAKSIS regrets that at this stage they cannot yet offer transport costs or a fee. However the team is happy to support applications for external grants wherever possible.
