Cartography and writers residency at ARNA i Fågelriket

ARNA is a nonprofit organsation in Sweden, working through the Culture Dimension of sustainability in the The Avian Kingdom. ARNA announces, during the winter and spring, 3-4 calls for projects and residency periods each year. Each residency period, or project, has their own aim and financing. Sometimes ARNA offer periods for rent without any obligations from our side, other times they offer Accommodation Grants and in return ask for a concert or other public engagement. And sometimes it is a project where the artists dedicate their time at ARNA to the aims of a project and in those cases the organizers might also be able to pay for the flights. At the moment, there are two open calls:

Writers Residence 2017

From late October the daylight gets markably shorter every day in The Avian Kingdom. This is the time to long for the spring and the light to come back. It is also the time for reflection and for conversations by the kitchen table over a cup of coffee. To light up this dark time of year teh organizers invite writers for a working stay around stories, poems or other texts in connection to art, nature or sustainable development. During the residency period ARNA will also work with a story telling project in Harlösa, involving both elderly and children. The Writers Residence will connect to this project through two public events, two evenings. One will be held in the library of the residence's village, Harlösa. The other event will be in a public gallery in a neighbour small town, Sjöbo. The language will be English with translation support from ARNA. The theme of the events will be to give story telling inspiration to the audience, through readings, tips or as a workshop. The plan for the events is open for suggestions and will be developed together with the chosen residents. If residents, taking part of the Writers Residence, want to become involved in the story telling project they are most welcome to do so. The Writers Residence 2017 offer 2 participating artists the following

  • Free accommodation with private room.
  • You will be given guided tours in the beginning of your stay to spark your inspiration.
  • You will meet friendly people in informal and inspiring ways, maybe making new friends both in  Harlösa, the village where the residency is situated and with other artists from around the world.

They ask from the writers:

  • To be yourself - a professional.
  • To take active part in the project and its activities, including two public events during the stay.

Through the Accommodation Grant the writers don't pay anything for housing, while they need to cover the costs of travel and living expenses themselves. You can send your application by email, before 15th June using the form at the application page.

Cartography residency 2017

The vision of the organizers for The Avian Kingdom is for it to become a UNESCO biosphere area and the world's first to include culture as the fourth dimension of sustainability from start. Their mission is to create art projects that demonstrate culture's importance for a sustainable development and by that, influence the process of a biosphere startup. The Avian Kingdom is a rural area, rich in nature preserves and heritage. They want this area to become a prime place in the world for Art & Nature and ask artists to be involved in the process. For The Avian Kingdom there is right now almost no printed material that describe it for visitors. The organizers want to change that with this project. Through ARNA's artist in residency the project CARTOGRAPHY will involve 3 artists during 6 weeks to visually describe The Avian Kingdom, its nature, history or people. The results will be used as, or as starting points for, 2-4 ground breaking "visitor maps".

The art project 'Cartography' offer 3 participating artists the following:

  • Flights (return ticket from where ever you live to Copenhagen international airport).
  • Train tickets for the commuter train between the airport and Lund where they'll pick you up at arrival.
  • Free accommodation with private room.
  • They organize the project and help you as a resident with the practicalities connected to the project inlcuding simple art materials.
  • You will be given guided tours in the beginning of your stay to spark your inspiration.
  • You will meet friendly people in informal and inspiring ways, maybe making new friends both in Harlösa, the village where the residency is situated, and with other artists from around the world.

They ask from the artists:

  • To be yourself - a professional who creates your personal interpretation of the theme 'Cartography'.
  • To take active part in the project and its activities.
  • Give ARNA permission to use material created during the project for printed matter, like visitor maps or other info materials. They will not use anything without artists permission but it is important to point out that the purpose of the project is to involve artists in the production of printed matter for The Avian Kingdom.

You can send your application by email, before 16th June using the form at the application page.
