Ateljé A-M announces an open call for a four-weeks residency for two artists, plus stipend (1800 SEK per month). The selected residents will be expected to research, develop and produce at least one project on the following issue: the relationship between human and nature. The title of the open call is "Without borders; Think, create and work on the human/nature relationship" and it is open to international and national visual artists in all disciplines.
1-2 artists will be invited for a period of time, between 1 November and 31 December. The application proposals for the working period should involve a plan for how the artist intend to work with the relation between humans and nature. During the residency, the artists are expected to involve, inspire and engage people from the region through art talks and/or workshops. During the residency period, youths will be invited to participate in an art event, during one day or evening. Other possible activities: painting with elderly people at the elderly care center and at the kindergarten in Örträsk. The art work will be included in an exhibition in December (at Lycksele Ateljé ) and optionally, in an exhibition in May 2018.
The selection committee will review applications based on quality, originality and artistic merit. Other consideration factors are: the potential impact of the residency on the applicant, the applicant’s past accomplishments, and preparedness to undertake the residency, the projects relation to the local environment and its feasibility to be carried out at the Ateljé A-M Residency. The potential to develop a creative practice and impact to the community at Västra Örträsk and beyond. Studio interviews with finalists will be held by the selection committee. In order to reveal the joined knowledge of the workshop/residency/process, all participants should prepare half an hour presentation of their own practice relating to the workshop, together with a 20-min practical demonstration of their technique as an exercise for the other participants and invited audience from the village and the region.
The setting of the residency is rural and the period for this residency is during November and December, which is during the early winter season. The weather can be anything between beautifully silent with bright sky, aurora borealis and crispy air to snowy, windy or rainy. Therefore, warm clothes are recommended. The residency provides winter clothing to some extent. The residency also offers wind shields/tents etc. for outdoor artistic activities. At the residency, you have access to 6 ha of woodlands which reaches from the Woolf creek to Örträsk-lake. The residency is situated in the South of Lapland where space and tranquility is the richest resource and privilege. Next to the residency there is a shop where you can find daily everyday consumer goods, such as food and toiletries etc. There is a restaurant 10 km from the residence where you can find lunch and sometimes you can also have dinner there. If you don’t have a car it is possible to take the bus to travel in the region and to the closest towns. However, the organizers can offer the artists a ride by car to Lycksele or Umeå (the closest bigger towns) three times a week. You will have access to bicycles and there are skiing and skating possibilities according to season.
The artist in residence includes:
- A single-room accommodation with breakfast included.
- Access to one large studio and 2 smaller indoor spaces.
- Access to washing machine.
- A stipend of 1800 SEK per month.

Responsibilities of the artist:
- All travel costs, except the ride to and from the airport.
- Personal insurance.
- Other food than breakfast.
- Artistic material, however, we can assist you to find and prepare material beforehand, just let us know in advance.
- A serious approach, attitude and commitment to the working period at the residency.
