Artists at Risk Connection

Artists at Risk Connection

Artists at Risk Connection (ARC) is a digital platform launched beginning of October 2017. ARC is a first-of-its kind global hub aimed to assist imperilled artists and fortify the field of organizations that support them.

Artists benefit from collaboration and also from better visibility for themselves and the organizations that serve them. Autocratic regimes fear artists because they express cultural identity, advance new ideas, promote dialogue, and bear witness to inhumanity. Artistic freedom is an indicator of a healthy and free society. Therefore Artists at Risk Connection is committed to:

  • improving access to resources for artists at risk
  • enhancing connections among supporters of artistic freedom
  • raising awareness about artistic freedom

ARC’s definition of “artist” is inclusive. They serve visual artists, musicians, filmmakers, performance artists, writers, and other individuals who produce significant creative output in any medium. The filter on the Find help page will give an idea of the range of disciplines, but it is by no means meant to be definitive.

Artists at Risk Connection (ARC) is a collaborative project led by PEN America, which has been committed to protecting open expression in the United States and worldwide since 1922. PEN America, a champion of the freedom to write, stands at the intersection of literature and human rights. It is the largest of more than 140 centers of PEN International.

At the moment there are 580- organizations included in the database. You can search by discipline and/or location. DutchCulture | TransArtists is also included, as resource that provides comprehensive database through which artists can search artists-in-residence programs around the world.

If your organization works in the arts or offers resources that artists at risk can avail themselves of, then you are encouraged to join the ARC network, even if serving artists at risk is not your stated mission. There is no fee for joining the ARC network.
