Applications for Mokuhanga AIR

MI-LAB Committee is pleased to open a call for application for 2019 Mokuhanga Artist-in-Residence at Lake Kawaguchi. Artists who want to learn/improve Japanese water-based woodblock printmaking (Mokuhanga) skills are invited to the following programs of 35 days each. Application deadline is March 20th, 2018.

2019 Mokuhanga Basic Training Program

A – From April 14th to May 18th
B – From September 15th to October 19th
C – From October 27th to November 30th

This program covers the fundamental skills of Mokuhanga including the process, techniques, tools and materials which are rooted in the tradition of ukiyo-e printing. Residency provides you with sufficient time to experiment with and further develop your skills of Mokuhanga in the peaceful environment of Lake Kawaguchi. This program is available to all artists and printmakers who wish to experience the introductory levels of Mokuhanga.
*If the organizers receive surplus numbers of applications, they might consider organising extra programs so that they can accommodate as many applicants as possible. Please write inquiry to the e-mail address stated in guidelines.

Please read carefully the Guidelines and Application Form. This is self-supported program. The participation fee is JPY 358,732 including a consumption tax and PayPal's handling fee. Please follow the payment instruction in the attached invoice. Artist who intends to participate by a grant preferably make sure to gain the fund before signing agreement of participation. The application for grants is at artists’ responsibility.

2019 Mokuhanga Advanced Program (August 1st to September 4th): This self-development program is designed for professional Mokuhanga printmakers. Artists are expected to come with a project using Mokuhanga and develop it through the residency (a proposal is required in the application). The program will also offer the technical advice of carving and printing for individual needs, as well as lectures on washi paper, and the workshop of baren-wrapping and of paper-mounting (the contents may be subject to change).

Please read carefully the Guidelines and Application Form. Artists in this program pay JPY 358,732 (including consumption tax + PayPal handling fee) to the MI-LAB Committee, of which JPY 89,683 must be paid at the time of the contract by as the registration fee and the remaining JPY 269,049 will be charged prior to your arrival at the Lake Kawaguchi Residence by cash or PayPal.
