Zaratan - Arte Contemporânea
Zaratan – Arte Contemporânea is a not-for-profit space and an organization founded by artists in Lisbon city center in November 2014. Zaratan is a creation, production and promotion structure for contemporary art and a space of reflection and listening. In order to stimulate creativity and contribute to generate valid cultural processes, Zaratan has developed so far an heterogeneous and mostly free of charge agenda of events, that parallel to the regular schedule of exhibitions, presents video-projections, concerts, talks by artists, presentations and performances. Zaratan defends an interdisciplinary attitude and aims to promote a deeper comprehension of the artistic languages of the present with an independent structure.
Artist In Residence programme
Zaratan provides a private workspace, a creative and trilling artistic community, exhibition opportunities and professional development for international artists in Lisbon (Portugal). The artists-in-residence at Zaratan are given the opportunity to develop a project over a fixed period of time, and to reflect and consolidate their artistic practice. The goal is to give the artists the possibility to bring their work in an international context through exchange and collaboration within the local network.
Eligibility
Emerging and professional visual artists, performing artists, sound artist, curators and writers are eligible to apply. The residency program is designed for international or Portuguese artists residing abroad for the development of artistic projects, individual or collective. Zaratan defends a multidisciplinary and experimental attitude, where all the areas and the languages of the artistic expression are considered. Our goal is to mix experienced with emerging artists and give them the possibility to bring their work in an international context through exchange and collaboration within the local network. The artists-in-residence at Zaratan are given the opportunity to develop a project over a fixed period of time, and to reflect and consolidate their artistic practice.
The artist or collective are required to undertake and carry out the research for a period ranging from a minimum of 4 weeks to a maximum of 12 weeks, Zaratan invites a variety of artists looking for diversity, across all mediums and disciplines, ranging from the emerging to the established. They promote a structure to focus, engage and work. During their stay in Lisbon, the selected artists will be required to meet on a regular basis with the curatorial team of Zaratan, who will also provide them with technical and organizational support for the entire duration of their research.
Zaratan provides a flat with a private sleeping room and a private working studio on the top of the gallery, technical assistence, promotion/communication support and the possibility of an open public presentation of the residency process.
All artists are encouraged and welcome to share the outcome of their residency through talks , performance, public presentations and open studio visits.
2 private studios of 20 m2. A general purpose space of 40 m2 with a height of 8 meters in one side and 5 meters on the other side.
2 private king-size beds.
Basic working power tools, multimedia devices (printer, video-projector, audio and video recording devices).
Zaratan participates in the 2021 i-Portunus EU Mobility Scheme for artists and cultural professionals.
