Signal Fire (Outpost Residency)

4153 SE Ivon Street

Description

Signal Fire was formed in 2008 in response to the urban demand on working artists. It provides opportunities for artists to engage in the natural world in a way that will inspire and inform their work. Utilizing Oregon's vast area of public lands, Signal Fire advocates for the importance of access to and protection of these places in order to enrich and sustain society. It maintains a commitment to keep the programming low-cost or free and accessible to artists working in all media. Outpost residency takes place in the Mt. Hood National Forest and is open to selected artists from a range of practices. Each summer the artists are brought out to the forest and provided with food, maps, a bicycle, battery power and shelter for work and sleep space. Artists are chosen by a jury of past participants. In 2010 Signal Fire will be hosting two week-long residencies with four artists each session: August 1-7 and 9-15. The artists will stay in large 12x12 wall tents. They will have kitchen supplies and food for self-served breakfast and lunch. Each tent will be set apart from the others, but within a short walk to a base camp. Signal Fire organizers will be at the base camp, available for emergency and unforeseen needs. Additionally, dinner will be served for all the artists each evening at the base camp.
The residency will culminate in a group show at a Portland gallery in the fall.
