Red Gate Residency is an international artist residency program, providing artists, curators, writers, and academics with the opportunity to live and create work in China. Its objective is to provide facilities for artists to easily start their projects and offer a community in which they can participate as much as they like.
Studio Information
Bei Gao Studio/Loft Spaces:
Red Gate's six studio/lofts are set in Feijiacun situated on the north side of Beijing. The site has been converted into a series of studios and apartments. It is a congenial and fun environment where Chinese and foreign artists are living and working together. The community is enlivened by many informal activities and frequented by many visitors.
Downtown Tuanjiehu Apartments:
Red Gate has three one-bedroom apartments in Chinese housing on the east side of Beijing close to the embassy and business districts. These apartments are situated in very local neighbourhoods allowing the residents to experience the traditional and modern flavours of Beijing; in many cases you will be the only foreigner on the block.
Accommodation Information
Bei Gao Studio/Loft Spaces: Each studio/loft is self-contained complete with local phone, internet, hot water, fridge, gas stove, bottled water, microwave, DVD, CD/Radio, washing machine, heating and air conditioning and adequate kitchen gear, furnishings and linen. Utilities and weekly cleaning are included. Each artist is given a bicycle to explore the neighbouring small villages and more deeply immerse themselves in the local culture.
Downtown Tuanjiehu Apartments: Each self-contained apartment has a lounge room, kitchen, and bathroom, with all amenities including fridge, bottled water, TV, DVD, CD/Radio, washing machine, air conditioner/heating, gas cooking facilities, hot water, linen, internet and local phone.
Utilities and weekly cleaning are included.
Paid by artist
Accommodation, board, food, individual traveling expenses, transport expenses. Applicants are encouraged to seek funding from relevant organizations in their own country. Once accepted, Red Gate will provide letters of support to assist with grant applications.
Location
Bei Gao is a thirty minute cab ride (40 RMB) from the Red Gate Gallery and The Beijing Art Academy & surrounding apartments are ten minutes away (15 RMB). The Beijing Art Academy area is also serviced by a variety of local bus routes that connect with Beijing's expanding subway system.

Application Criteria
Please check the website for the most recent application and application guidelines. There are no application deadlines, but as the selection process can take several weeks, and bookings are made well in advance, applicants are encouraged to send their completed application package well ahead of time. At some times, facilities may be available at short notice. They accept artists, writers, and academics from all disciplines.
