Description

Paradise Air has held the Longstay Program under various themes and with different application requirements. The 10th edition of the programme (2023) – under the theme ‘Puzzling Poly+Semy’ – is open to all people of all nationalities working in the arts field.

Outcome

For Long Stay Program:

  • connecting with local leaders and conduct regular fieldwork and/or interviews.
  • artists may plan to work collaboratively with an artist in the Matsudo region.
Studio Information

PARADISE AIR residence consists of two rooms, and other 6 rooms within the building will be Soho studios. The studios can be used as creator’s office, studio or residence, and they benefit from having diverse artists visiting for the AIR on the same floor. The house-rent of Soho studios will be the main funds for running the a.i.r. programs, and the center plans on realizing a purely private-run art/cultural institution in the first three years.

Location

With a population of approximately 480,000, the city of Matsudo is situated in the northwestern region of Chiba Prefecture. The Mito Kaido highway, JR Joubansen line, and Edo River all run vertically through city centre. Matsudo, positioned between Tokyo and Mito, has flourished as an inn town along the Mito Kaido since the Edo period. Pieces of art given long ago by cultured travellers in exchange for lodging now decorate the homes of many Matsudo citizens.

Matsudo now serves as a midpoint between downtown Tokyo and Narita International Airport, and as a result, has grown from a rest stop between Tokyo and Mito into a city connecting Tokyo to the rest of the world. Thus, PARADISE AIR serves as a point of transit for travelling artists from all around the world in order to foster a new artistic crossroads for the benefit of all those who pass through Matsudo.
