Application guidelines:

As of 2012 there is ongoing all year “Open call” for applications for Old school artist residency and they welcome last-minute applications. The application form is on their webpage.

Residence time starts at first day of each month. A panel of professional artists review the applications shortly after the receipt. Applicants are notified of the committee´s decisions within 1 week.

The Old school arthouse residency in Hrisey Iceland is owned by the artgroup Nordanbal.
The Old School AiR aims at being a sustainable and non-profitable residency. The main objective of the residency is to provide an opportunity for artists in all media including writers and performing artists to work, meet, exchange ideas, possibly cooperate and enjoy the peaceful life and scenery of the island.

Studio Information

Each artist in the residency has a private studio shared by 3 other artists.

Accommodation Information

Four independent bedrooms, working area for three persons or groups, internet connection, sitting room combined with kitchen, shower, washing machine, television, library etc.

Technical Information

Wireless internet connection - The Residency does not offer any technical facilities.

Location

The island of Hrísey is by the north coast of Iceland, short from the arctic circle. The island is surrounded with a breathtaking view of the mountains on the coast of Eyjafjordur and the atmosphere will put you back in time of peace and wonderful nature.

The Old Schoolhouse is centered in the small village on the south coast of the island, with a good view over the area, ca. 10 min. walk from the harbour. Population is about 150 persons. The island is 7,0 km2 and 7,5 km long.

The only way to get to the island of Hrisey is by the ferry Sævar from Árskógssandur. It’s scheduled every hour in the summertime (different winter schedule) and takes ca. 15 min. There is a bus from Akureyri to the harbour of Árskógssandur (ca. 30 min. drive).

Service in the village of Hrísey: restaurant, grocery store and swimming pool. Easy access to beautiful nature, bird watching and walking trails around the island.
