Technical Information

The centre has a library with a specialised collection of books on visual culture. Discourse, critique and history are the main pillars of acquisitions policy, so that the collection is not only orientated towards the departments but is also interdisciplinary. There are seven technical workshops: audio-video studio, computer studio, printing office, photo studio, graphic studio, wood workshop and materials workshop. These are intended for artistic production by participants, tutors, technical tutors and guests within the framework of the programme of the academy. Priority is given to the work of participants.

Accommodation Information

Participants have the use of studio space equipped with the basic facilities. In some cases it is necessary that they share a studio. The studios are accessible 24 hours per day. Rooms and flats are in short supply in and near Maastricht. Participants are advised to look for accommodation as soon as possible after their admission has been confirmed.

Location

The Jan van Eyck Akademie was founded in 1948 as a national institute for higher education in the visual arts. The intention was to make it possible for promising young artists who had already completed their initial training elsewhere to continue their studies in Maastricht. At the beginning of the seventies a new concept took shape in which a formal academic structure was no longer considered appropriate to 'higher education' in the visual arts. In other words, the need was not for a teaching situation but for a working environment in which young professionals could benefit from collaboration with and guidance from more experienced colleagues according to their individual needs. Since 1978 this 'workplace-concept' has been put into practice at the academy. Since 1992 two new disciplines are offered: design and theory. The three departments are responsible for organising the departmental and public programme. In 1997 the research field Transcultural studies has been started; in 1999 the research field Design and media is opened. Proceedings of the activities are published regularly. See for the recent publications the publication list.

Deadline

15 April, 1 October

Application Criteria

Participants are expected to have an openness towards possiblitities of an active presence in the fluid pattern of society. Translating such openness into an experimental post graduate research is not a matter of working in more than one discipline, context or culture, but rather of letting the experience of thinking in one field play a role in another one. Participants are co-responsible for the department’s programme.
