Description
Shanghai is an inexhaustible city, changing and shifting every instant, every blink of the eye. This programme was set up in order to create an interactive opportunity for artists to build a relationship with the city, and to channel its unique dynamic into creative energy. The programme allows artists from all over the world to live in Shanghai and produce site-specific work.
island6 Arts Center was founded by artists, and is entirely run by artists. The objective of the program is to invite 2 to 4 artists at a time for a minimum stay period of 4 weeks of intensive production, which is then followed by an exhibition opening.
The residency program includes individual studio space, individual bedroom and bathroom, weekly art criticism, daily assistantship, monthly portfolio review and monthly application to our ongoing exhibition.
Technical Information
The gallery owns over 750 square meters space including exhibition area and an attached production studio. island6 provides technical assistance and organizes silkscreen, metal welding, arch welding , pcb design, CNC engraving, mould making, paper cut, traditional Chinese painting and oil painting workshops.
Studio Information
Individual studio space. There are five studios, all provided with electricity, internet, heating and cooling system.
Accommodation Information
Individual bedroom and bathroom. Two accommodation places: apartments in the city center; a villa in front of Shanghai University.
Paid by artist
island6 residency program is managed on a not-for-profit basis. Participants are expected to cover the costs of travel, living, accommodation and studio whilst island6 provides all the necessary support to make your time in Shanghai fruitful and enjoyable. Applicants are encouraged to seek funding from relevant organizations, island6 is happy to provide letters of support that will help the artist in applying for grants in their home countries.

Location
island6 Arts Center is located in the center of M50 - the biggest Shanghai Creative Center that hosts more than 50 contemporary art galleries.
Deadline
There is no deadline, but applicants are encouraged to send applications well ahead of time.
Application Criteria
Applications are sought from both established and emerging artists, arts writers or curators across the visual arts with a strong vision of what they would like to accomplish during a residency. Artists are selected based on the quality of their work and their interest in working in Shanghai.
The following criteria will be taken into consideration for the selection of the candidate:
- the candidate must be at a turning point in his/her artistic development
- learning must be the central preoccupation of the project
Interested should send a C.V., a comprehensive portfolio and a written proposal.
