Description
Hospitalfield has an international reputation as a residential art centre. Hospitalfield offers different residency programmes - please check their website carefully and regularly to know more about their current opportunities. Artists' residencies provide time, space and studio access to artists wishing to develop their practice. They are provided both as funded opportunities with partner institutions, or by independently funded application.
The Interdisciplinary Residency runs on several two-week dates per year and is open to applications from international cultural practitioners and theorists. Applicants to this programme need to bring their own funding to support their place and the costs include 24 hour studio access, accommodation and all meals are provided. Partner funded residencies can be one month long.
Please note that Hospitalfield's programmes are devised for artists or others developing their working lives within the scope of contemporary art practices. Hosts expect that applicants will have had a formal art school training or similar and will be developing projects and new work for public exhibition or developing their research with some public outcome in mind.
Covid-19 update: The Interdisciplinary Residency Programme 2021 is open to applications from UK-based artists, writers, architects, producers, dancers, choreographers, curators, designers, educators, researchers and those developing their working lives within the scope of contemporary cultural practices. If you are based internationally, you can submit an application for consideration in the 2022 programme.
Studio Information
Studios - two studios built in 1904 by the Trust and one studio built around 1850 by Patrick Allan-Fraser for his own use. This earlier studio has many homely features including a huge fire place. The later studios are vast with very high ceilings and very good access, one of these spaces has been neatly divided to provide two good sized more private spaces. All the studios have excellent north light from the very large windows that look our across the barley field.
Studios in the House – we have a number of smaller rooms in the house, particularly in the towers and turrets that make useful studio space. The light is good but access is dictated by the architecture, spiral stair cases and lots of steps.
Outside spaces for large projects adjacent to the studios – there are a series of sheds built around a central space that provides a good space for larger sculptural projects.
Wet dark room – the dark room is in working order and can facilitate individual use however we are making an investment in to this facility in spring 2013 which will make it a far more safe useful facility. Inductions are essential for use outwith the Courses & Classes programme.
Etching Studio – newly installed and run in collaboration with Dundee Contemporary Arts (DCA), the studio has a small etching press, size is therefor limited but it is set up extremely well and makes a great place to work for experienced artists after an initial induction. Location
Over a period of 120 years the house and grounds of Hospitalfield House, in its wonderful location over looking the north sea on the north east coast of Scotland, has hosted and facilitated artists, students, educators, writers and others working within the broad themes of contemporary art, design and cultural ideas. This is a place that has had a central role in the arts and cultural ecology of Scotland for a very long time and will continue as it has; an organisation facilitating the culture of our time, attentive to the required changes and organisational shifts that will enable us to respond to contemporary questions within art and culture.
Hospitalfield is a 19th century artists’ house and there are a number of steps up to many of the rooms in the house and between the House, Studios and around the Grounds.
