Language:
English, Portuguese
Founded:
2009
Duration:
1-3 months (longer periods can be arranged)
Paid by artist:

Artists are expected to pay for their expenses. This includes studio space and accommodation, which are both in situ at the gallery. Costs start from €900/month to €1,200/month, depending on the facilities included.

Residents are expected to fund their own expenses as HANGAR is unable to cover the cost of rent or provide other forms of financial aid covering living expenses, materials used to produce artwork or travel costs. We therefore only work with artists that can organize their own funds or have received grants to cover their residency.

Application guidelines:

Potential artists should apply to HANGAR by email. The selection is decided by a jury that determines the most promising candidates. Please email them at residency[a]hangar.com.pt with the following information in ONE pdf document:

  • A brief description of the work you intend to create during your residency
  • Bio/CV
  • Portfolio
  • Writing samples (for the writer's residency only)
  • The dates on which you intend to stay at Hangar.

Description

The Residency program at Hangar encourages dialogue, exchange and experimentation. The program is non-prescriptive and process-based, allowing visiting artists to develop projects in response to their new environment, or to conduct research benefiting from Lisbon´s resources. The Residency Program is firmly established in the Lisbon art scene, promoting diverse cultures and practices through international and experimental projects.

Hangar develops several International Residency Programs that give non-resident artists in Portugal or Lisbon the opportunity to live and work in Lisbon for a period of one month to three months (longer periods can be arranged.) The program aims to facilitate the international exchange and the exchange of ideas through artistic practice in the areas of visual arts, performance, photography and video.
Through strategic partnerships in the international art world and institutions linked to cultural production and artistic research in various countries, mainly through the Triangle Network, Hangar program aims to strengthen the existing exchange between Portugal, Europe, Africa and South America.

Outcome

Artist talk/presentation, leading class or workshop.

Studio Information

No studio equipment is provided, but Hangar has some multimedia equipment to share and 24h hour wireless internet. There is a shared light-room (consumables not included). Hangar has contacts with organisations in Lisbon (photography darkrooms, video editing and print making facilities) that can provide equipment and services for visiting artists at reduced rates. Studios include basic furnishings (desk and chair). Access to office equipment (photocopiers, computers for email and internet) are available upon request during office hours.

Accommodation Information

The Residencies Programme is open to artists working in all disciplines; however, one must note HANGAR has restricted facilities. HANGAR has 7 room studios for residency, 4 of them with private bathroom and kitchen facilities and 3 with shared bathrooms and a shared area to prepare and have meals with minimum kitchen appliances. Hangar currently arranges for all resident artists to live in the building where the studios are located.
