Description
The Yueji Kiln International Contemporary Ceramic Art Center was established in early spring 2009 in order to preserve the significant heritage of the region while hosting artists from around the world to create new works, experiment, and draw inspiration from the unique ceramic history. Dehua County is renowned for its translucent white porcelain which local artists have used to create devotional figures and sculpture since the Tang Dynasty.
Technical Information
Work Studios offer facilities for working in clay including basic glazing ingredients, three wheels, one slab roller, one electric kiln, one wood-firing salt kiln, and two 33-meters-long wood kilns.
Paid by artist
The fee for a work period of 2 months is US$3,800. 1 month in the summer period is US$2,150. Staying less than 1 month is charged US$80 daily. Students are charged US$40 daily. The fee includes: private apartment and utilities (double bed-room and shared bathroom), 3 meals a day, free wood for salt wood-firing, wireless broadband Internet, working space, promotion and set-up of solo exhibition in the gallery, 100 kg/month local Dehua porcelain, virtual gallery on the Yueji Kiln Ceramic Art Center website.
Location
The center is located on a scenic mountainside next to the famous Yueji kiln, a traditional climbing wood-firing kiln that has been in use for over 400 years. Yueji Center features a newly constructed 3000 square meter studio space, multi-functional exhibition hall, bar/dining room, resident houses, 1 electric kiln, 1 salt-firing kiln, pottery wheels, slab roller, and the opportunity to fire works in the dragon kiln.
Application Criteria
Applications are open to all potters seeking an opportunity to present and realize a project in a rich cultural environment. Potters who have been working independently for at least one year may apply for an individual residential work period. The application processing fee is US$20.
Decisions are based on the documentation of previous work over the last 5 years (slides or digital images of your work and curriculum); quality of the project work plan and the proposals' suitability for the Yueji Kiln Ceramic Art Center.
