Darb1718, based in the ancient artisan corner of Old Cairo, is one of the most influential contemporary art and culture hubs in Egypt. The newly refreshed residency program offers artists the opportunity to experience authentic Cairo in an immersive cultural setting. The residence program is unique and multidisciplinary, suitable for writers, researchers, visual artists, and curators within all media.

The Fustat location is particularly relevant for ceramic artists because of the area’s long history in ceramic production. Contemporary art exhibitions and collaborations with international art organizations are frequently organized in the exhibition areas. Darb1718 is a popular music venue and frequently hosts a variety of concerts and performance events.

The residence program is designed for selected internationals and locals who wish to pursue their creativity in a genuine environment of cultural resources and networks. Darb1718 residency program offers a unique platform for artists to produce, practice, and present their projects. The residents will be offered private rooftop accommodation within the historic center of Old Cairo. The location features many historical monuments such as Amr bin Al-As Mosque and the Hanging Coptic Church. The newly built National Egyptian Museum is within walking distance. Across the street, is the Fustat ceramic village hosting hundreds of ceramic studios, each using traditional methods and local materials.

Outcome

The residents have the option to offer lectures to the community. Exhibition opportunities will be considered on an individual basis and are subject to availability.

Technical Information

Darb 1718 has a number of indoor and outdoor venues that can accommodate over 3000 people:

  • Main exhibition space consists of two floors of 420 square meters.
  • Garden of Cinema el Fourn is 400 square meters.
  • An open square with garden between the main building and the office 1,200 square meters.
  • An annex of 140 square meters serving as supplementary exhibition space and workshop. It includes a terrace of 70 square metres in addition to an office and storage facilities.
Location

Located near metro station Mar Girgis in Old Cairo, very convenient. Outside of Downtown Cairo, about 20 minutes by metro to the gallery. Situated in the Fustat area of Old Cairo, Darb 1718 is surrounded by omnipresent archaeological treasures.
